Losing somebody close to us takes away a piece of our lives that cannot be replaced. The time immediately following the passing of a loved one can be very emotional and clouded. Use this step-by-step guide to help you through those first hours after a loss.
What to do immediately upon the death of a loved one:
1. Call SereniCare to arrange for transport
After the death has occurred, notify SereniCare by calling any of our locations. We are available anytime, day or night. We will then set a convenient appointment time with you and your family to begin the funeral planning.
2. Contact your spiritual advisor and close family members and friends
You and your family will want to inform your clergy or spiritual advisor as well as your family members and friends of your loved one’s passing.
3. Meet your Funeral Director and Case Manager and begin funeral preparations
Whether you decide to meet in our office or at a more convenient location, your first meeting with our case manager and funeral director will put you at ease. Together you will create a personalized, unique funeral service for your loved one. Our professional staff has experience planning and coordinating funeral services for all faiths.
4. Gather Information
Take time to find a nice photo and provide text for the obituary and funeral service program. Your case manager will be able to assist you with this. Whether funeral services or cremation services have been selected, it would also be an appropriate time for us to receive the clothing for your loved ones services. An appointment may also be made if it is your desire to participate with the dressing which is often a very important step in the mourning process.
5. Veteran Information
If your loved one was a veteran, bring the discharge papers and/or date of service as well to the arrangement conference if you are able. It will then be our privilege to assist in the filing process for veteran’s benefits and securing an honorarium for the graveside service, if desired.
