Marjorie Lorriane Andrews

Marjorie Lorraine Read was born 24 Feb 1930 to Lillie and Lloyd Read in Portland, Oregon, one of the youngest of a large family. The family moved often, and Margie lived all around the Willamette Valley.

She graduated from West Linn High School, married Frederick Barnes Andrews Jr., and moved to Pennsylvania, all in the spring of 1948. She had six children and enjoyed being a mother. The family lived in Ohio for a few years, and then they transferred to the California Bay Area for twenty years. Marj first worked in a country-western clothing and Navajo jewelry shop and then helped set up a library at an elementary school before getting a job as a technical librarian at Sylvania Electronics Co. She and her husband, who was an electronics engineer, enjoyed working at the same company for ten years. When her husband took early retirement, they moved to Oregon and built a home in the country outside of Salem, and she began working for the State as a librarian. She finished her career in the State Library for the Blind, enjoying sharing her love of books with her client list. She was an avid reader all her life.

She and her husband loved to travel and spent ten years living in one or the other of their two RV trailers, spending winters in Arizona and summers in California, Utah, or Idaho (or all three). One of her favorite trips was a visit to Spain with her two daughters. On the parapet of a castle in Segovia she exclaimed with total joy, “I’m standing in a castle in Spain!”

A life-long dedicated Christian, she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when she was 40 years old and enjoyed teaching Sunday School, working in the library, and serving in the St. George and Jordan River temples as an ordinance worker. She loved reading the scriptures and singing in choirs.

When her first grandson was born and required extensive care, she and her husband moved in with their daughter for two years, sacrificing their time and interests, to provide the necessary care. She loved her grandchildren and great-granddaughter very much.

When she was 78, Marj discovered she had a massive brain tumor. She had surgery to remove the tumor and was up walking laps around the nurses’ station first thing the next morning instead of requiring weeks of physical and occupational therapy as her neurosurgeon had predicted. She rebounded and lived twelve more years, but her husband’s death a few months after that surgery cast a pall of sorrow over those years.

Marj was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Fred; two sons (Larry and Dan), and a granddaughter (Natalie); also by four older sisters (Viola, Loretta, Charlotte, and Alice) and three older brothers (baby Lester, Herb, and Carl).

Survivors include two sons (Stefan and Allen), two daughters (Marci and Karen), five grandchildren (Kimberlee, Sean, Tristan, Marcus, and Adrienne), a great-granddaughter (Olivia), in-laws, an older brother (Clarence), and her younger sister, Barb. She was especially close to her niece Lynne Vaughan and to her sister-in-law Caroline Andrews Mitchell.

The family thanks Intermountain Hospice Services for their excellent care; especially Arla Jaramillo and Tara Anderson.

Cremation services were provided by Serenicare Funeral Home. Burial on Wednesday, November 27, in the Riverton City Cemetery. Memorial service on Friday, November 29 at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 12852 South 3200 West, Riverton, Utah. Dedication of the grave immediately following the service.
