Monica Lee Hicks

On Thursday, June 18th, 2020 Monica Lee Kleindl Hicks earned her eternal angel wings. We celebrate the life of a loving daughter, sister and her most prized titles of mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Monica was born and raised in Elmore, Minnesota. She was the first child of Bernard and Edna Kleindl and born on January 3rd, 1951. Although quiet and passive, Monica was stubborn and even more determined at a young age.

After graduating high school in 1969, Monica made the bold choice to move from her sheltered town and life across the country to California. There she began her career in healthcare which lasted more than 40 years. Monica was a natural born caregiver and showed her love and kindness to any patient who crossed her path no matter their differences or ailments.

Naturally being a wonderful caregiver lead to her greatest and most cherished role of being a mother. Her children Richard and Melinda were and will remain her pride and joy and first true loves. Serving as a single mother for most of her children’s childhood, Monica showed strength and perseverance over frequent challenges.

After many years in California she took a nursing position in Molokai, Hawaii. While living in Molokai, Monica became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and quickly became the adoptive "missionary mom" of the island. Monica showed numerous missionaries love, support, and the comfort of the main land home cooked meals! Monica was at her most carefree and happiest while living in Hawaii.

After 5 short years, she made another long trek to her final home in Utah. Monica continued her nursing career in long term care and retired in 2010. Once retired, Monica enjoyed her time enjoying her down time her children grandchildren and her beloved two dogs and grand dog! The past two years have been brought upon many health struggles for Monica and she did her best to fight. We are truly grateful for the time she was on loan to us on this earth. Although our loss and hurt is great, we are elated for the joy she must have felt being reunited with all of her passed loved ones.

Monica is survived by her sisters, Sue and Marty and their families. Her beloved children Richard (Valerie) and Melinda, her grandchildren Davion, Kameron and Micah and her great grandchildren Zayn and Nyla. Her precious fur baby Violet (Letta) and her grand dog Diezel. Monica's other fur baby Ari, ironically went to heaven a few weeks before she did. Our family believes we are all characters in this already planned game of life and that all things happen for a reason. We truly believe Ari knew his mom was on her way to heaven, so he had to be there to greet her.

Although we will not be having a public memorial for Monica, she has given her children very specific instructions as to where she wants her last resting places to be.

Our family is incredibly grateful for the staff at Cascades at Riverwalk for the sincerity and love they showed our mom for the past 18 months. Your kindness and the attention she was provided is undeniably what helped give us a bit more time with her.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, Monica wanted everyone to strive for a united human race and to show kindness to any and all who may cross your path.

Mom, Thank you for being the best mom you could be. Thank you for being an example of unconditional love and making sure there was never a moment we did not feel your love. We both inherited your enormous heart and trait of giving. We both promise to continue to be a reflection of you in everything we do. To love and support each other and our family in all things. We would give anything to have even one more minute with you, but we know you are here and always be! We love you more than the stars in the sky and will only miss you when we are breathing! Love you forever, Rich and Mindy
