After a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease, Bruce Hiller, age 78 passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Bruce was born August 1, 1947, in Salt Lake City, to Gunter and Lois Hiller. During his childhood and throughout his life, Bruce experienced a number of significant health challenges, which he faced courageously, never letting them hold him back. He graduated from Granite High School and went on to attend the University of Utah, earning a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in business administration.
After graduating from college, Bruce met Kristine Lindberg on a blind date. They grew close, and Bruce wrote to her consistently while she served an LDS mission in South America. When she returned, they picked up where they left off, and they were eventually married in the Salt Lake Temple. Bruce was always incredibly dedicated to Kristine and their five children. His family always came first. He worked hard throughout his life to provide for and support his family. He was employed as a corporate controller for several companies and was most proud of the work he did designing computer programs for those businesses.
Bruce enjoyed the outdoors and target shooting and was an avid fisherman. He was known to fish until it was completely dark and then announce, “one more cast.” He especially enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren how to fish.
In addition to his commitment to his family, Bruce made his Latter-day Saint faith and service to others a priority in his life. He happily served in various callings including bishop, ward and stake mission leader, and counselor in the stake presidency. His genuine care for others helped him connect with people on an individual level. He was well known for his joke telling and sense of humor. Whether his jokes were groan-worthy or hilarious, he knew how to make people smile and is remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Bruce loved collecting spiritual quotes, and as his health declined, he enjoyed sharing his collection to help uplift and inspire others. Even when his body wouldn’t allow him to serve others physically, he continued to bless lives through his example, his love, and his unwavering testimony.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and genuine friendship. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Kristine; his children Mark (Melissa), Darrin (Alicia), Katharine (Justin) Harward, Ryan (Melissa), Evan (Melissa); brother Larry Hiller; 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
We are grateful for the numerous medical professionals and hospice workers who cared for Bruce over the last 14 years as he battled Parkinson’s disease. We would like to especially recognize Dr. Kathleen McKee, and Dr. Rebecca Moore for going above and beyond in their service.
