Cheryl Ida Jolley Smith

‬‭Cheryl Ida Jolley Smith died following a stroke on May 26, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah,‬ surrounded by family and friends.‬

‭She was born on June 19, 1953, in Long Beach, California, where her father, Calvin Barnson‬ Jolley, and mother, Gene Holt Jolley-Stone, met. Cheryl spent her early years with her five‬ siblings in Highland Park and Glendale, California. After her father suddenly passed, her mother‬ married Dr. Joics Bagley Stone, and the Jolley family became the Jolley-Stone family of 11‬ children, which grew to 12 when Michèle was born.‬

‭The family eventually settled in Hacienda Heights, California, where Cheryl indulged her love of‬ music and theatre and graduated from Los Altos High School.‬ She then attended Brigham Young University, where she received a bachelor’s degree and a‬ Juris Doctorate, being one of only a handful of women in the program. She also eventually‬ completed a master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Utah, though she remained‬ a practicing attorney.‬

‭In June of 1974, Cheryl married Shane Smith in the Los Angeles California Temple, a union that‬ ‭ joyously brought Tamerin and Damon into the world. After the dissolution of the marriage,‬ Cheryl was married to John B. Anderson for a time.‬

‭Ever the free spirit, Cheryl traveled the globe researching history, science, and Jolley family‬ genealogy, and writing hundreds of pages of analysis. She was brilliant and often stubborn,‬ traits that served her well as an attorney and made her a provocative companion.‬

‭In addition to living in California and Utah, Cheryl spent extended periods of time in Texas,‬ South Carolina, France, Mexico, and Spain. She visited Austria, Denmark, England, Holland,‬ Germany, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, China, Egypt, Greece, Jordan, Türkiye, and the Holy Land.‬

‭Cheryl will be interred in the family plot in Alpine Cemetery, half a mile from the stone house‬ where her mother spent her childhood. Freed of her earthly body, she now continues her‬ search into the mysteries of the universe.‬

‭She is survived by her children: Tamerin Smith and Damon Smith, and his wife, Teddy; her‬ grandchildren: Ava and Isadora Mahon, and Alexander James Smith; her siblings and their‬‭ spouses: Clifton Jolley (Gail), Marilyn Stone Platt (Dave), Vernon Jolley (Charlena), Stephen‬ Stone (DeeAnn), Valerie Jolley Kennington (Edd, deceased), Robert Stone (Sandy), Bryant Jolley‬ (Karen), Marti Stone Call, Philip Stone (Lorrie), Glen Jolley (Holly), Michèle Stone Hynynen‬ (Kullervo); and dozens of nephews and nieces and their children.‬
