Our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend was released from his earthly mission on Saturday, January 27, 2007 and was reunited with his sweetheart and eternal companion, Maurine, and his beloved daughter Kathleen, who were eagerly waiting for him on the other side.
A remarkable man with unbounded optimism and a smile that could warm even the coldest heart, Dad blessed countless lives during his 93 years on earth. He loved the Lord with all his heart and was a worthy example of Christ-like living. Dad was born on July 14, 1913, in LaVerkin, Utah, to Henry Wickley and Susanna Pickett Gubler, the tenth of twelve children. He attended school in St George, Utah, and graduated from Dixie College in 1933 as valedictorian. He served an honorable mission and developed a lifelong love of the language, the culture, and the German people. He studied chemistry at Brigham Young University, where he met the love of his life, Maurine Kjar; they were married in the Manti Temple on September 21, 1938. After graduating from BYU, the newlyweds were off to Utah State University to pursue a master's degree in chemistry. Then they went to the University of California, Berkeley, where Dad earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1947. Dad devoted his academic career to cutting-edge research and teaching: first at the University of Utah Medical School and later at Brigham Young University. While at BYU, he became known worldwide for his substantial contributions in human biochemistry and enzyme research. He is also fondly remembered by the many graduate students he lovingly mentored. After retiring from BYU, Dad and Mom were off to the Middle East where Dad established the graduate school of biochemistry at the University of Kuwait, and taught biochemistry at the University of Oman, in the Arab Emirates. Dad's real treasures were his family and dear friends, and although he was a man of substantial achievement in his profession, he will be most fondly remembered by his 4 children, 21 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren as a humble man who led and taught by example. He served in Church callings and leadership positions too numerous to mention.
Dad is survived by his two sons David (Julie) Gubler, of St. George, and Ronald (Sue) Gubler of Orem; one daughter, Anne DeArden of Minneapolis, MN, and sisters Ruth Nielson, Lavell Turner, and Ardella Heiner, all of LaVerkin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine, his daughter Kathleen Tolman, and six brothers and a sister.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007, at the Orem Vermont Second Ward chapel at 4th North and 4th East in Orem. Viewing from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Orem City Cemetery.
