David Boyd "Dave" Slack, 66, passed away on June 2, 2026, surrounded by his family after a difficult journey with Alzheimer's disease complicated by subdural injuries.

Born on December 1, 1959, in Henderson, Nevada, Dave was raised in Clearfield, Utah. In his youth, Dave served an LDS mission in Seattle, Washington, an experience he was proud of and remained important to him throughout his life. He later made his home in Salt Lake City, where he built a life centered on family, friendship, and the outdoors.

Dave’s lifelong fascination with technology, gadgets, and computers (long before such interests became commonplace) led to his working 27 years in Information Technology and Software Engineering with L3 Communications and its predecessor companies. After leaving L3 in 2012, he worked briefly for Humana before retiring during the COVID pandemic.

Dave shared nearly 30 years of marriage with his wife, Sue, and was a proud and devoted father to their son, Jeff. He found joy in the ordinary moments of family life, including the close bonds he formed with the family he married into, who were important and steady presences throughout his life. He also cared dearly for the many beloved dogs and other animals that shared his life and home over the years.

Those who knew Dave will remember his devotion to his family, his love of animals, and his intelligence, independence, determination, sense of humor and intuitive mechanical skills. In his free time, Dave enjoyed reading, figuring out how things worked, solving problems, exploring new technology, and immersing himself in the worlds of science fiction. He was a “jack of all trades” who could fix almost anything, from cars to plumbing, carpentry and woodwork. He loved spending time with family camping, hunting, and exploring the landscapes of Southern Utah and its many state and national parks. Some of his happiest memories were made on those trips with his family and while spending time at the cabin in Idaho.

Throughout his difficult illness, especially through his final years, his family never stopped seeing the man, husband, father, and friend he had always been. His final years were marked by immense medical challenges, but also met with extraordinary love, care, and dedication from those closest to him. The love his family held for him never wavered.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Carlyle and Marian Slack; his sisters, Ellen, Susan, and Marie; and a lifetime of beloved furry companions.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; his son, Jeff; his brother, Ellis (Marie); and many extended family members and friends who will miss him deeply.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date, and his ashes will be spread on the mountainside overlooking the family’s cabin.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that loved ones spend time with family, explore the outdoors, make new memories, and hold tightly to the moments that matter most.
