Gary Ray Owens
Gary Ray Owens, our “Cowboy”, returned home to his Heavenly Parents on March 18th, 2023. He was born in Delta Utah on April 3rd, 1951 to Shirley Rothwell and Eugene H. Owens.
He married Patricia Welch on November 22nd, 1974 and together they had three incredible children, Casey Ray, Robyn Lynn, and Heather Owens.
He later married Joni Jacobson on March 20th, 1987 and they were blessed with two sons, Cache and Colton Owens.
On September 6th, 2001 Gary married Kathlene Nelson. They were later sealed for “forever and a day” in the Jordan River Temple on September 26th, 2007.
Gary truly has a cowboy spirit. He was known as “Two Crows” and “The Man Under the Green Hat” whenever he attended annual Mountain-Man Rendezvous.
Gary loved hunting, especially water fowl, with his family, friends, and beloved dogs. He spent weekends exploring many of Utah’s beautiful deserts on drives looking for wild horses with Kathlene. Many of those drives turned into camping adventures in the trailer. He was an avid reloader and loved spending time with family shooting firearms, and teaching the skill of reloading to anyone who would listen.
He loved his potato chips and mountain dew, cinnamon bears, and eating ice-cream straight from the carton.
His grandchildren looked forward to spending Christmas Eve with Cowboy where he would pass out everyone’s favorite treats from his large, red velvet Santa bag.
Gary was a talented craftsman and finish-carpenter. He leaves a legacy of incredible wood-work at churches and temples across the country.
After moving to Payson, he found joy and renewed friendships with many of his friends from Delta, while serving as an ordinance worker in the Payson Utah Temple. His impact truly stretches into the eternities!
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Heather Owens.
He is survived by his wife, Kathlene. His children: Casey (Katie) Owens, Robyn (Sean) Wilson, Cache Owens, and Colton Owens. Step-Children: DeAynne (Kevan) Baker, Rick (Kim) Locke, Jennifer (Tyler) Eborn, Mary (Owen) Mecham, and Brent (Xela) Locke. Siblings: Robert (Sharon) Owens, Judy (Art) Smith, John (Jeanie) Owens and many nieces and nephews.
Together, Gary and Kathlene have 28 grandchildren that they lovingly called “perfects”, and Gary was looking forward to welcoming his first great-grandchild expected in June this year.
The family will honor Gary's request for no formal funeral services. They will receive visitors at a viewing on Saturday, March 25th from 12-2pm at 952 W. 1580 S. Payson, Utah. (The chapel south of the Payson Temple)
Gary, your family and friends love and miss you! Make sure you remember that Kathlene will always meet you “anywhere under the green hat”.
