Helen Jean Tingey was born August 19, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Rulon Horne and Jane Fraser Tingey. She passed away peacefully at her Ogden, Utah home on January 30, 2026 at age 94.
Helen was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints. Helen was called to serve on the Young Women Mutual Improvement Association General Board, and she also served on the advisory committee of the newly formed LDSSA. She also served as Stake Primary President in New Mexico and Young Women’s Ward and Stake President in California. In Utah, she was a counselor in the stake Relief Society. With her husband, Helen served a CES Misson at the Glendale Institute of Religion in Arizona. She also served as a sisters coordinator at the Ogden Utah Temple which led to a call for Helen and Wayne to serve as missionaries in the Nauvoo Illinois Temple. Helen was able to complete her 18-month mission as an ordinance worker despite her health issues.
Helen was raised in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School. After graduating from BYU with a teaching degree in business education, Helen taught English and history at Midvale Junior High in Utah, then business classes at Armijo Joint Union High School in Fairfield, California. She returned to BYU and received a master’s degree then taught business education for the College of Business at BYU.
After her marriage to Wayne R. Decker in 1970, she lived in Silver City, New Mexico, where their children, Mark and Deanne, joined the family. After 14 years, they returned to Utah where she always wanted to be. The family grew to include ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Helen was an amateur chocolatier. She always had chocolates at family gatherings. She remembered those who liked her cherry chocolates and had some on hand for those friends. Many received her chocolates at Christmastime.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Tingey, and her grandson Chase Adams. She is survived by her devoted husband Wayne Reeves Decker, and their children Mark (Gayle) of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, and Deanne (Jared) Andersen of Ogden, Utah, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
We would like to thank Canyon Home Health Care and Hospice for all the time, love and care they devoted to Helen.
