Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dr. James E. Hether

Dr. James E. Hether—a dedicated healer, devoted patriarch, and man of profound faith—peacefully entered into eternal rest on July 15, 2026, at the age of 78. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of generational love, lifelong service, and an inseparable 56-year romance with his beloved wife, Kathe. Dr. Hether also solely was responsible for the Palmer College Of Chiropractic Port Orange, Florida Campus.

A Life of Service and Passion

Born with a calling to care for others, Dr. Hether dedicated six decades to the practice of chiropractic care. Through those years, his hands brought relief and wellness to countless individuals. Deeply rooted in his community, he frequently donated his time and care to those in need, truly embodying the spirit of Christian charity.

Though born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, James grew up along the sunny shores of Daytona Beach, Florida—a place he always considered home and cherished returning to throughout his life. After living across many states and cities, he ultimately chose to retire to the majestic mountains of Draper, Utah. There, surrounded by beautiful vistas, he felt uniquely close to God’s creation. A devout parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, he embraced the outdoors with vibrant energy, enjoying hunting, hiking, and daily walks with his loyal dogs, Sophie and Molly.

A Legacy of Inseparable Love

His greatest life story began after returning from military service. While attending Daytona Beach Community College, Jim spotted Katherine Branch across the cafeteria and told a classmate, "You see that girl over there? Someday, I'm going to marry her." Despite his classmate’s doubts, Jim gathered his courage and asked her out.

What started as a simple conversation quickly turned into a date—and an enduring joke. When taking her to the Steak-n-Shake and the bill arrived, Jim playfully convinced Kathe he couldn't pay before producing the emergency $100 bill he kept hidden in his wallet (a habit he maintained for the rest of his life). Just two days later, right after Christmas, they packed their belongings into a van, drove across the country to California, and officially began their grand adventure together.

Through 56 years of marriage, their devotion only deepened. They weathered every storm side by side, always returning to one another with unwavering love. Knowing his time might one day come, Jim even hid letters for Kathe to find—each one reaffirming his devotion and expressing how blessed he felt to call her his life partner.

Family Legacy

James was welcomed into heaven by his parents, Fred J. and Twila Hether; his brother, Fred L. Hether; and his sister, Jane Self.

His legacy of love continues through his surviving sister, Jeanie Gill Borden, and brother, Charlie Hether; his 10 cherished children and their spouses; and an incredible lineage of 31 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who were the absolute joy of his life.

Dr. James E. Hether lived a full, vibrant, and meaningful life. He was a pillar of strength for his family, a shepherd of health to his patients, and a faithful servant to his Creator. He will be profoundly missed by all whose lives he touched.
