James Newton Wallace

James Newton Wallace, Jr. was born Feb. 1, 1922 in Taylorsville, Utah to James N. and Clara Mackay Wallace.

In his youth he worked on the family farm with his father and brothers. He competed in 4-H projects while in High School. He served a mission for the Church in Southern California where he met his future wife Darlene Hendrickson. Following their marriage on Sept. 9, 1944, he served in the US Army during WWII in France and Germany.

After his military service, he returned to Santa Barbara, California where he worked for his father-in-law in the monument business. In 1957 he moved his family to Salinas, California where he started the Wallace Memorial Company, which he owned and operated for 31 years. He and Darlene served as senior Missionaries in Oklahoma where he served as a Branch President. His service to the Church brought him much joy. He served in many callings in the Church over his lifetime: Stake Young Men Presidency in Santa Barbara, Bishop and as the first Stake President of the newly formed Monterey Bay Stake, and many other Priesthood Leadership positions. He served at the Provo Missionary Training Center for the last 8 years, which brought him much joy and satisfaction. He was always aware of missionary opportunities to share his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Following the death of Darlene in 1995, he married Gloria Strauss of Orem, Utah. They had many opportunities to travel, a new experience for him. Jim and Gloria served together as Stake Missionaries.

He is the father of four sons, Gary(Teresa), of Salinas, CA; John(Carolyn) of Vancouver, WA; Bill(Debra) of Conyers, GA; Kenneth(Diane) of Cameron Park, CA. At the time of his death, he had 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. In addition he had 7 stepchildren, 23 step grandchildren and 15 step great grandchildren.

There will be a viewing held at the Orem 5th Ward at 60 S. 800 East on Fri. Aug. 25, at 7-9pm and Sat. 9:30-10:30. The funeral service will be held Sat. at 11:00am. Burial will take place in Salinas, CA.
