Mapleton's First Fire Chief
John Bleggi passed away at home in Mapleton, Utah surrounded by his family on February 9, 2007 at the age of 85. John was born April 22, 1921 to Santo and Anna Bleggi. Following Santo's death John was raised by Tony Antonino and his mother along with his seven brothers and one sister. John was born in Carbon County and moved to Mapleton as a young boy. John married his sweetheart and soul mate, Rea Bona, on March 16, 1946.
He served in the army during World War II for three and a half years as a staff sergeant in the Signal Corps. He was a farmer and a livestockman. He also enjoyed several civic positions and was the first Fire Chief for Mapleton City. He joined the LDS church in 1970 and was sealed to his wife Rea in the Manti Temple in 1971. John held several church positions.
Johnnie will be greatly missed by many people. He was a wonderful husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, dad, friend, farmer, golfer, firefighter, veteran, and fisherman. He is survived by his wife Rea Bona Bleggi, daughter Jan Marie Bleggi, five grandchildren: Mindy (Ryan) Christensen, Carly Ashby, Brady Hitchcock, Tawny (Seth) Carter, Sadey (Dustin) Montgomery; three great-grandchildren: Chloe Jon Ashby, Adyson Montgomery and Piper Montgomery; one brother: Nino Antonino; and one sister: Rose Bona Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Frank, Charlie, Lewis, Angelo and Joe.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Mapleton Stake Center, 970 N. 400 E. To honor John and Rea for their years of service to the city, a viewing will be held Tuesday, February 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mapleton City Hall, 125 W. 400 N. A viewing will also be held Wednesday morning one hour prior to services at the Mapleton Stake Center. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
