It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of John Philip Chamberlin on the evening of April 24, 2025 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
On Tuesday, October 26, 1926, John began his 98 year journey of life being welcomed into this world and loving arms of his parents, Philip and Constance Chamberlin and a sister, Connie, whom he adored.
After completion of his formal education at South High School in Salt Lake City in 1944, he joined the war effort and set sail with the U.S. Navy where he met the love of his life, Shirley Annette Depue at a USO dance. Upon his discharge from the Navy, John and Shirley settled down in Southern California and started a family beginning with their three beautiful children, a son and 2 daughters, Scott, Sally and Bonnie (Joh), 6 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Always a pillar of his community, quick with a smile, lending a helping hand, from coaching little league in his younger years to a lifetime of faithful service to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he touched the lives of all he met. His light will be dearly missed.
Love you to the moon and back.
Jack as he was known to all, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, April 24, 2025, at the age of 98 in Salt Lake City. He was born on October 26, 1926, to loving parents, Philip (Phil) and Liberty Chamberlin. Salt Lake is where he took his first breath, and also his last.
As a young boy of six the family, which included an older sister, Connie, moved to Chicago. His father, with less than an eighth-grade education, was self-taught and became an engineer. He helped pioneer and develop radio. Jack spent his childhood years in Chicago and later in Cleveland, where the family flourished. He skated on double runners on the ice-covered asphalt with his friends. He loved playing and watching sports, especially watching the Cubs at Wrigley Field with his father. In middle school, he excelled at track.
His father's job took the family to Cleveland, Teanac, New Jersey, and then back to Salt Lake. He then graduated from South High School at age 17. After high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served as a radio man on the USS Frank Knox, a destroyer. At a USO dance in San Diego, he met and fell in love with a lovely lady named Shirley Depue. They were married in Los Angeles on August 20, 1947. They had three children: Bonnie “Joh”, Sally, and Scott.
The family settled in Southern California, mostly in Whittier. Jack worked in printing, selling business forms. He was an incredibly hard worker and always provided for his family. He ensured that his family grew up knowing Christ and living a good moral life through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Jack was widowed in 1989. He is survived by his children, Joh, Sally Jean, and Scott Allen. He was a sweet, good man who loved people and celebrated life every day. A caring father, grandfather, great, and great-great-grandfather; he was loved and cared for by all who knew him.
