Mary Dorothy Himes Mayne was born March 29, 1920 to Charles and Mary Himes in Salt Lake City, Utah. When she was 3 years old the family moved to Park City, Utah where she grew up. She was the oldest of six children. Dorothy went all the way through school in Park City graduating in the class of 1938. She was working as a cashier in Park City when she met a mine worker named Steven Lynn Mayne. On May 24, 1941 they eloped to Evanston, Wyoming and were married. Their first son was born in 1942, then Steve joined the Army and left to fight in WWII. Dorothy stayed in Park City and raised their son. Steve came back and went back to mining. They left Park City and went to Monticello, Utah where they lived for 10 years. They had four more children and in 1959 moved to Grants, NM. Steve worked as a purchasing agent for Homestake while Dorothy stayed home and raised their five children. Dorothy always made the best of things wherever she was living. She made friends and got involved in the community. She worked with the PTA at her children's schools and volunteered to be room mother. She worked with the Girl Scouts and high school science fairs. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and the March of Dimes. In Grants she was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and WAAIME, an organization for wives of men who worked in the mining industry. She was also a member of the Cibola Arts Council and the Cibola Hospital Auxiliary. She served as an officer in all of these organizations. She did volunteer work at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop, putting in thousands of hours of volunteer time over 45 years. In 1986 she was named as Woman of the Year by the AAUW for all of her years of service to the community. Dorothy and Steve traveled a great deal, going on many cruises and seeing much of the world. Dorothy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she served in many capacities. She loved her church and was very faithful. Dorothy lost her husband Steve in 1993 after 52 years of marriage. Dorothy died January 14, 2013 in Salt Lake City, Utah after a short illness. She was 92 years old. She is survived by her five children: Charles and wife Judy of Salt Lake City, Utah, Steve and wife Kathy of Bluewater, NM, Micheal of Mimbres, NM, Jackie and husband Doug Bloomfield of Ramah,NM and Cindy and husband Wendell Behunin of Lehi, Utah. Also 18 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is also survived by three brothers: Gene Himes of Enumclaw, WA, Jack Himes of Las Cruces, NM and Hal Himes of Brigham City, UT. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Services for Dorothy will be held on Saturday Jan. 19 at 11:00 AM, with a viewing being held at 10:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1010 Bondad in Grants.
