Celebrating the Life of Matthew Lee Newbury “Matty”
Matthew Lee Newbury, affectionately known by all as “Matty,” passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of pure love, joy, and unforgettable memories. Born on November 27, 1974, in American Fork, Utah, Matty spent his 51 and a half years of life proving that a person's worth is measured by the size of their heart. He was, without a doubt, the absolute best son, brother, uncle, friend, and companion anyone could ask for.
A Life of Achievement and Passion
Matty was a vibrant and active participant in the Special Olympics. While he collected his share of accolades in track and field, swimming, and cycling, he won far more friends and fans than medals. Recognized for his fierce determination and his unwavering will to always do his best, Matty was deeply honored to serve as an honorary torch bearer for the Special Olympics, a testament to the light he brought into this world.
From wrestling, sword fighting, and pie in the face staredowns. Matt's laugh lit up any room and he was always in holiday costume, iconic t-shirts, and sporting a BYU, Jazz, or Utah Mammoth hat. Any reason to eat Popcorn, Pizza, Rootbeer, and Milk Shakes was welcomed.
He had a zest for life and an eclectic mix of passions. Matty loved animals of all kinds and was an avid fan of Professional Wrestling, Pirates, Ghost Busters, Firemen, and EMS Workers. He found joy in “simulated” fire dancing and was famous for his enthusiastic impersonations of Elvis Presley, Hulk Hogan, and the “Claw”. More than any hobby, though, Matty just loved people. He cherished his time going to "work" each day, surrounded by the amazing, loving caregivers and his second family at the vocational care facilities.
Faith and Family First
A dedicated follower and disciple of Jesus Christ, Matty’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. He proudly served a one-year LDS service mission at the Dan Peterson Seminary and remained actively devoted to his church service duties throughout his life.
Above all, Matty loved his family. He treasured family time, sharing an especially deep and beautiful bond with his mother. He poured endless love into his roles as a brother and uncle, always adoring his sisters, little brother, and his many nieces and nephews.
"Matt loved everyone, and to know him was to be loved by him."
Those Who Carry His Memory
Matty is survived by: his mother, Val Graham; stepfather, Marvin Graham; sisters, Marlo Dawe (Ian Dawe), Bobbie Newbury, Wendie Rigby (Scott Rigby) and Jenni Newbury. He is also survived by many adoring nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
He was reunited in heaven with his father, Ronald Newbury, and his brother, Rod Newbury.
Our comforting belief is that Matthew and our eternal family will all be together again in the near future to gather, embrace, and celebrate his wonderful life.
No longer bound by earthly weight, He stands before the golden gate. The hands that struggled, and the mind that fought, now holds the peace he’d valiantly sought.
The one who faced a steeper hill, now moves with grace, by heaven’s will. No handicaps, no pain, no tears, just perfect joy through faithful years.
Presenting in robes of brightest white, he follows Christ's redeeming light.
Always first to smile, and first to greet, With open arms for all he’ll meet.
For one who bore a heavier cross, now shines as gold untouched by loss.
His mission here complete and done, He stands with God, as a welcomed son.
We love you, Matt. God be with you till we meet again.
