Maurice "Mike" P. Marchant

Maurice P (Mike) Marchant died 15 Nov 2006 at his home in Provo. He was born 20 Apr 1927 in Peoa UT to Stephen C. and Beatrice Peterson Marchant. He grew up in Salt Lake, graduating from South High and the Univ. of Utah where he lettered in wrestling. Mike married VaLoy Hansen, 1949. He earned an MA from the U. and became a librarian. He was director of the Ogden Public library and led the creation of the Weber County library. In 1966, the family moved to Ann Arbor where Mike earned a PhD from the U. of Mich. He joined BYU as a professor and directed the School of Library & Info. Science. Mike was a strong proponent of the democratic process. He served as chair of the Utah County Democratic Party and ran for the state legislature and Provo City council. Mike was active in his church and served an LDS mission with VaLoy in 1995. He was an avid genealogist. Family history research was his main avocation. Mike leaves as a legacy the love of learning, personal integrity, and the pursuit of truth wherever it may be found. He is survived by his wife; children, Catherine, Westfield NJ, Barrie, Lincoln NE, Alan, Fairport NY, Roxanne Fillmore, Tahlequah OK, Anne Drew, Provo UT, David, Colorado Springs CO, and Theresa Marchant-Shapiro, Onalaska WI; 35 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 12 siblings. Funeral at 11am, Tuesday Nov 21, Edgemont 12th Ward, 2950 N Canyon Road, Provo; viewing at 10am. In lieu of flowers consider a donation to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund or the American Diabetes Assoc.
