MD Bruce Neerings Hathway

Bruce Neerings Hathaway entered immortality at 6:30 a.m., February 6, in his home. For the past year and a half Bruce battled with cancer, but continued his medical practice and active lifestyle until the final weeks of his life. Born on April 6, 1947, Bruce grew up as the eldest child of Leonard Jensen and Cora Neerings Hathaway in Salt Lake City. He served in the Central German LDS Mission before pursuing his education at The University of Utah. On November 1, 1974, he married his sweetheart, Janice Eastmond, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Bruce and his young family lived in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; New York City; and finally Albany, New York, where he completed his residency specializing in internal medicine and infectious diseases, with an emphasis in HIV and AIDS. Bruce practiced medicine at Wisconsin's Marshfield Clinic for nine years. In 1994, he and his family moved to Greenville, North Carolina, where Bruce joined the faculty of East Carolina University Medical School. The family moved to Provo in 2001, where Bruce launched his private practice. Active in the LDS faith throughout his life, Bruce served as branch president and bishop. He loved music a€" listening to opera as well composing and arranging for the piano. Bruce was also a rock hound, turning his geological treasures into jewelry. An Apple computer aficionado, he enjoyed photography and graphic design. He loved literature, art, theatre, and being with his family. Bruce is preceded in death by his son Scott and his father Leonard. He is survived by his wife, Janice, and their children: Heidi, Heather, Hillery, Benjamin, son-in- law Greg, daughter-in-law Amelia, and granddaughters Abigail and Emily. He is also survived by his mother Cora Hathaway Elggren, brother Michael, and sisters Rebecca (Creighton) West and Heather (Mark) Dodge. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 9 at 11 a.m. in the Timpview LDS Chapel, 2900 Timpview Drive (650 East) in Provo, with a viewing from 9:00 - 10:30. The interment will be at the American Fork City Cemetery.
