Michael Evans Platero, he went by “Mike” or his favorite nickname “Papa”, 56, entered the next life peacefully with his family by his side on December 31, 2023 in Ogden, Utah.
Mike was born in Crownpoint, New Mexico to his parents Evelyn and Mike Platero on October 31,1967. He grew up on the reservation and enjoyed exploring the mesas and the outdoors, helped his dad and uncles with cattle and horses, riding bikes and playing basketball with his friends. As he got older he found a passion for working on cars and trucks. He loved taking his brother and sisters on rides in his little silver Datsun.
At 16 he came to Utah through the Indian Placement Program and was baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He graduated from Bingham high school and that is where he met the mother of his children, Shaunna Scheib and married her in 1988 before being surprised with their twin daughters. He graduated with a certificate in Youth Couseling from Brigham Young University. Mentoring and being a good example to young persons was an aspiration of his. He was always a hard worker and worked with his hands all his life. He was very talented and creative.
He worked on the pipeline for Williams company for 4 years from Colorado to Idaho. After that he worked as a welder for Icon health and fitness in Utah for 20 years. Then continued to weld for different welding companies and even worked for Boeing and helped with the building of the new state prison as a welder in the Salt lake city areas. He continued his education at Bridgerland Applied Technology College for Auto collision. He also received management and safety certifications.
Working and rebuilding his blue chevy truck was one of his favorite past times. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, drawing, making metal art, and traveling and seeing new things. Mike enjoyed parties and celebrations with friends and family, enjoyed movies, music and dancing. He could always spark a conversation with anyone, loved making jokes, teasing and sharing funny anecdotes. He always found something to laugh about. Raising his girls was one of his proudest accomplishments. He made an imprint on his family and friends and had a very strong native spirit that never went unnoticed.
There will be no burial, Mikes wishes were to be cremated. There will be Celebration of Life for him on Sunday January 7, 2024 in Brigham City, Utah at Alpine Church for those wish to give their condolences, share any memories, and say their farewells.
Michael is preceded in death by his Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and brother Elden Platero.
Michael is survived by his children Michelle (David) Roche and Vonya (Chris) Cook; parents, Evelyn and Mike Platero; 3 sisters Violet Manuelito, Charlene Platero, Charlotte Platero; His 8 grandchildren Reileigh Roche, Gabriel Cook, Reagan Roche, Matthew Cook, Charleigh Roche, Evelyn Cook, Isabel cook and Joezie Roche; and nieces and nephews.
The family of Michael Platero wishes to extend our sincere thanks to McKay-Dee Hospital ICU and medical teams and Intermountain hospice.
