Nephi Johnson Campbell

NEPHI JOHNSON CAMPBELL Our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Nephi Johnson Campbell, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013 in American Fork. Dad was born December 12, 1921 in Cannonville, UT to Benjamin Franklin and Emily Celesta Johnson Campbell, the 8th of 12 children. He had an adventuresome childhood growing up among the red rocks below Bryce Canyon. As part of the "Greatest Generation", Dad joined the CCC camps working mostly in American Fork Canyon building roads and campgrounds. It was during this time that he met his sweetheart, Alice Elaine Chadwick of American Fork. They were married on June 30, 1941 in American Fork, and were married for 72 years. Even though he was married with two children, he served in the US Army during WWII. He served in the Pacific as part of the liberation of the Philippines and the occupation force in Japan. He received several awards including the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. Dad worked very hard as a brick mason well into his 70's to provide for his family. Even though he tried to come across as kind of gruff, we all knew he was a teddy bear inside. As his family, we knew he would do anything for any of us. Dad is survived by his wife, Elaine; six children: Sherry (Karl) Carter, Gary (Terry) Campbell, Pam Reynolds all of Orem; Chad (Verlayne) of St. George, Jim (Martha) of Grass Valley, CA and Mel Campbell of American Fork. He is also survived by 43 grandchildren, 151 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Reba Smalley of Mesa, AZ; one brother-in-law John Chadwick of Ogden; and one sister-in-law Alice Campbell of Ivins, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters. We'd like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Heritage Rehab Center and American Fork Hospital for their care of our father. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 11:00 am at the 29th Ward LDS chapel on 673 E. 300 No., American Fork, UT. Viewings will be held Friday evening from 6-8 pm at the chapel and before the service at 9:30 am. Interment will be at the American Fork Cemetery. Funeral Services by Serenicare Funeral Home. Military Honors by VFW Post 4918.
