The Rev. Peter J. Van Hook was born May 5, 1947 and peacefully passed away of cancer Dec. 16,2018. He was a graduate of Lewis & Clark College (B.S), Church Divinity School of the Pacific (M.Div.) and University of Utah (Ph.D.) He is survived by: his wife, Carole; children: including Michael Van Hook (Laura), Lisa Hamilton, and Emily Lindell (Scott); 10 grandchildren; and his sister, Christina Van Hook. He loved family, camping, traveling , woodworking, reading, watching moose and deer at his Shady Moose Lodge and enjoying time with his Bernese Mountain dogs “Schultz the Magnificent” and “Greta the Ungrateful”.
He was ordained an Episcopal priest on Feb. 24, 1973 and continued in his ministry for 45 years. He served parishes in California and Idaho. In 1981 he was called to All Saints Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City where he served until 1991. He served as a Disaster Relief Consultant with Church World Service. As interim priest and supply priest, he faithfully served in nearly every Episcopal parish in the Diocese of Utah as well as Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church in Park City. He loved these last 6 years as priest when he served St. Mary’s Church in Provo (2012-2018) and pursued his passion for community outreach via music and work with the underserved. He was so proud of the many support groups which meet at St. Mary’s. He will be remembered for the generous and caring spirit he emanated.
Memorial services will be at Cathedral Church of St. Mark (231 E. 100 S., Salt Lake City) on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11:00 a.m. followed by committal at St. Mary’s Church (50 W. 200 N., Provo) at 2:00 p.m. followed by reception. Donations welcomed to continue the work he began at St. Mary’s Church Music Outreach Program (50 W. 200 N., Provo, UT 84601) or to support the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. The family deeply thanks Lifecare Center of Salt Lake City for providing him with excellent care which gave him comfort in his last days.
