Ralph Barnett Goodwin, 91, passed away at his home in Provo on June 19, 2006. He was born May 8, 1915 in Beaver, Utah to George Albert and Mary Frances Goodwin, the youngest of 5 children. He married Shirley Patten on November 22, 1940 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was educated in Beaver, Utah and attended college in Cedar City and Logan. He began employment with the Western Electric Company installing telephone equipment and was sent to work in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he met his sweetheart of 66 years. He joined the US Army and served 2 years active duty during WW II. After his discharge from the military he returned to work for Western Electric where he remained employed for 35 years. The family relocated to Paramount, California where they lived for 20 years. In 1966 the family moved to Provo, Utah where they have resided ever since. He and Shirley have 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many leadership positions, including Bishop of the Long Beach, CA 6th Ward, High Councilor in the Long Beach Stake and the BYU 2nd Stake, and temple worker in the Provo LDS Temple. He and Shirley served a full time temple mission to the Manila, Philippines Temple where he served as a sealer. He had the privilege of performing the sealings of 5 of his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, music, and the performing arts. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley, and 5 children: Rhoda Debes of Provo, UT, Larry (Ann) Goodwin of Pleasant Grove, UT, Doris (Steve) McKinnie of Glenwood Springs, CO, Nolan (Tanya) Goodwin of Provo, UT, Ilene (Kennan) Beckstrand of Fruit Heights, UT, 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister and 3 brothers.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 1:00 pm in the Edgemont 6th Ward chapel, 4000 N Timpview Dr, Provo. A viewing will be held at the same location on Friday, June 23 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM and at 11:30 AM on Saturday prior to the service. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
His influence was felt by many and he will be missed by all.
