Robert Kent Smedley

 

 

Our beloved son and brother, Robert Kent Smedley, passed away unexpectedly on June 21, 2023 in Taylorsville, UT at the young age of 39.

 

Robert was born February 13, 1984 at a whopping 13 pounds to Kimball and Nancy Smedley in Murray, UT.  During the years he attended Monroe Elementary, his mother worked at the school which allowed them to spend quality time together.  Rob’s mother passed away just after he finished sixth grade.  He then attended West Lake Junior High.  For high school he attended Job Corps of Weber Basin and Job Corps of Treasure Island (San Francisco) where he excelled in bakery arts and studied to become a professional cake decorator, which is what he spent most of his adult life doing. Robert married Gerson Garcia Varon in February 2017 and spent several happy years together, but sadly they were separated at the time of his death.

 

Robert was shy and kind, gentle and casual. Quick to make others laugh, but there with a timid hug when needed. He was braver than most and such a hard worker.  He tried to never depend on anyone so he almost always worked two jobs. He never asked for help even when he needed it most. Yet, when he could, would be there to help and serve anyone.  He was proud of his nieces and nephews and expressed that in private all the time. 

 

Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Lynn Oyler Smedley, grandparents Gordon Kent Oyler and JoAnne Eunice Sowerby Oyler, and Samuel Wayne Smedley and Joy Ellen Tuft Smedley, and stepbrother Christopher Turner.  He is survived by his father and stepmother, Kimball and Karen Smedley; siblings Daniel Smedley, JoAnna Vea (Telema), and Stephanie Smedley; stepsisters Charease Bichard (Clint) and Chelsea Robison (Joshua); eight nieces and nephews and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

 

We bear testimony that Robert has returned home to his Heavenly Father and our Savior, Jesus Christ, and is enjoying a long overdue embrace from his mom, Nancy.

 

Graveside services will be held for Robert on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn cemetery (2350 E. 1300 S.
