Sadly, our beloved Sonya Lynn Kartchner, 61, of Moroni, Utah, passed away on December 12, 2025, after years of battling cancer. Sonya was born on November 8, 1964 to Lynn Devon and Edith LaDella Mellor Shaw.

After graduating high school, she went on to study respiratory therapy at the University of Utah. Before she could complete her studies, she was diagnosis with MS and had to leave school. After her diagnosis she decided to work as a flight attendant until the MS made it too difficult. During this period, she met her best friend and soul mate Troy Dee Kartchner who became her husband on April 22, 2011. They were blessed with 14 years of true happiness.

She is survived by her husband, Troy Kartchner, sons, Andy Curtis & Cody Atkinson, stepdaughters, Crystal Peterson, Katie Kartchner, Kylie Campbell, brothers and sisters, Kathy & Steven Enfield, Michael & Nann Shaw, Troy & Kim Shaw, Robert & Kelsey Shaw. In-laws, Dee & Gerda Kartchner, brothers and sisters-in-law, Amber & Jerry Cox, Scott & Diane Kartchner, Kris & Hal Gaerte. Grandchildren Tristan, Braeley, Kamie, Jacob and Jason. Sonya also leaves behind a broken-hearted supportive group of  relatives & countless friends. Sonya was predeceased by her parents, Lynn and Edith Shaw, her brothers Gary Shaw & Craig Shaw, and her sister-in-law Kathleen Jenkins Shaw.

Sonya was a big personality in a small package. She had an impact on each person she interacted with. She was courageous, inspirational, kind, loving, funny, full of joy, a ball of fire that showed us what can be accomplished with determination and persistence. She lived her life to the fullest, despite her many challenges. Her greatest joys and accomplishments were the love of her husband and the gift of being a mom.

The cabin became Sonya’s true happy place. She found a lot of peace and joy there. If you visited, she would ask you to paint a rock so she could remember your visit. Countless hours were spent on her favorite hobby crocheting Afghans so many she lost count. So many people were blessed with one of her beautiful creations. She also donated 100’s to charity.

A Celebration of Life to honor Sonya will be held Saturday December 27, 2025, at noon at the Moroni Activity Center, 300 North Center Street, Moroni Utah

In lieu of flowers we ask those who can please donate to help Troy cover the mounting medical and funeral expenses. Donations can be made to his Venmo account Troy Kartchner @ Troy-Kartchner
