Steven Ralph Bytheway

Steven Ralph Bytheway, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on August 11, 2025, at the age of 81. Born in Spanish Fork, Utah, to Ralph and Ruth Bytheway, Steven entered the world with the help of his Grandma Hazel, who assisted in bringing him into the arms of his loving family. The oldest of five children, Steven grew up learning the value of hard work, faith, and family—principles that guided him throughout his life.

In 1963, Steven served an Eastern States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, an experience that shaped his deep love for people. During his mission, he served as an ambassador at the Mormon Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, representing his faith with warmth and dignity.

On September 1, 1965, Steven married the love of his life, Laraine, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together they built a beautiful life, raising four children—Brad (Stephanie) Bytheway, David (Jody) Bytheway, Debra (Jeremy) Littlewood, and Becky (Jake) Alvey. They were blessed with 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, all of whom were the joy of Steven’s life. Being “Grandpa” was his favorite role, and his grandchildren knew they were deeply loved.

Steven devoted 33 years to the Utah Highway Patrol, serving the people of Salt Lake County with kindness, understanding, and compassion. For him, public service was more than a job—it was a calling. He was committed to keeping people safe and assisting in times of need, whether that meant lending a reassuring word or engaging in the occasional high-speed chase. His career reflected both his dedication to law enforcement and his willingness to go above and beyond.

Even while serving as a police officer, Steven found joy in driving trucks, a job he considered his “happy place.” After retiring from UHP, he continued driving for Old Dominion Freight Line for many years, loving the open road and the sense of peace and purpose it brought.

Steven’s hobbies reflected his adventurous and caring spirit. He enjoyed flying drones with his grandsons Zack and Harizen, riding his bike, working in his yard, listening to classical music, and going on vacations—especially cruises—with Laraine. He delighted in watching NASCAR and attending races with his son Brad and grandson Nick. His dogs were his constant companions and best buddies, and he took great joy in their company.

A proud patriot, Steven loved his country deeply. His life was an example of service—to his family, his community, and his nation.

Steven is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Laraine; his children; his siblings Diane (Dave) Burton, Karen (James “Bic”) Bickerstaff, and Scott (Debi) Bytheway; as well as his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Ruth Bytheway; his sister Linda Carroll; his daughter-in-law Natalie Bytheway; and his beloved dogs, Oscar and Toby.

Steven’s legacy of love, service, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and remembered always.
