She was born December 1, 1948, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Grace Eloise Burdick and Conway Welch Dunn; she was their first child. Susie moved with her family to Boise, Idaho, and Covina, California, as a child. She attended Cal Poly Pomona and Brigham Young University before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Munich, Germany. She enjoyed serving in Germany and loved the German people. She talked about her mission often. Susie loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and was a faithful member of the church her entire life.
Susie married Drew Slater on June 23, 1973, in the Los Angeles Temple. They are the parents of five children. Drew served in the army and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington; Seoul, Korea; Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Wheeler AFB, Hawaii; and Edward AFB, California. After his military service, they lived in Provo, Utah; Mt. Clemens, Michigan; Portland, Oregon; and Kent, Washington. Susie and Drew divorced in 1994.
Susie moved to West Valley City, Utah, in 1996. She worked at American Express and Rasmussen Equipment as an accounting clerk. She lived with her parents and helped them as they grew old. She moved back to Washington in 2015 to be near her children and grandchildren. Susie enjoyed spending time with friends and family; she was a people person. Listening to music and watching movies were some of her favorite pastimes. During her youth and high school years, she learned to play the piano, including several difficult classical pieces.
