Wally had a great interest in baseball, a sport for which he was paid to work as a catcher for the Bird Island, Minnesota town team during his summers in between his college years at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. If it had not been for his taking a job "playing" baseball in Bird Island, God only knows how history would have played out.

He was employed by State Farm Insurance as an auto claims adjuster in South Dakota, returned briefly to managing a Standard Oil service station in Willmar, Minnesota and finally returned to State Farm in Mankato, Minnesota. Wally planned well for his and Barb's retirement, and settled in Arizona.
